In this class students will study Japanese literature of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Edo shogunate had a policy of seclusion from the outside world until the early 1800s (with a few exceptions), however, the Japanese government began to contact other countries in the 1850s and began to westernize. It will consider how this affected Japanese literature and how Japanese literature affected Japanese society. The class will be conducted in Japanese. Students are expected to read literature in Japanese and present it in Japanese.
