This course is designed for students who have successfully completed Standard Chinese 3. Building on the solid foundation of intermediate grammar and vocabulary, this course accelerates students' progress toward a more advanced level of proficiency. The focus shifts from sentence-level construction to paragraph-level discourse, enabling students to handle a variety of communicative tasks with greater confidence, precision, and cultural appropriateness. Students will refine and expand their ability in all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) by engaging with more authentic materials. The curriculum emphasizes the use of complex sentences, idiomatic expressions, and cohesive devices to narrate and describe. Students will learn to understand the main ideas and some supporting details of authentic texts on familiar and some unfamiliar topics, express and support opinions on abstract issues, and handle situations that may involve an unexpected complication. The class meets three times a week, with each session lasting 1.5 hours. Active participation and engagement with the language both inside and outside the classroom are essential for success at this level.
