This course is designed for students who have successfully completed Standard Chinese 4 or have reached an equivalent intermediate level. Building on the foundation of intermediate grammar, vocabulary, and paragraph-level discourse, this course moves students toward greater independence in handling authentic Chinese materials and more complex communicative tasks. The focus shifts from paragraph-level expression to short discourse-level production, enabling students to organize ideas, sustain arguments, and respond appropriately in academic, social, and culturally nuanced situations.

Students will continue to develop all four language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—through more authentic and challenging materials. The curriculum emphasizes advanced sentence patterns, discourse cohesion, idiomatic expressions, and the appropriate use of formal and informal registers. Students will learn to understand main ideas and supporting details in extended texts, express and defend opinions on abstract and socially relevant issues, summarize information from multiple sources, and handle situations involving negotiation, disagreement, persuasion, and cultural misunderstanding.

The class meets three times a week, with each session lasting 1.5 hours. Active participation, consistent preparation, and engagement with Chinese inside and outside the classroom are essential for success at this level.
