The course offers an overview of an important period in American cultural history designated variously as the American Renaissance, Transcendentalism and American Romanticism. We will try to establish why and how these texts and authors testify to an emergent national spirit. The authors include: RW Emerson, Walt Whitman, HD Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, Catherine Maria Sedgwick, Frederick Douglass, and Herman Melville.
